about me

There are five basic rules:

1) Enjoy yourself.

It is the first, and the most important rule. Cooking should be enjoyable, if something doesn't turn out right, phone the Chinese, order a pizza, fry an egg, whatever! You will learn from the mistakes you make, we've all been there, and that's part of the fun;

2)Eat what you buy.

Seems obvious doesn't it? but we all buy stuff, eat part (or none) of it, and then forget about it until it's too late, and it ends up in the bin. The best way to save money in the kitchen  is to not throw stuff away;

Hi, I'm Billy, I'm a grandad and I live in Spain, so some of my grand-children call me Yayo (grandad in Spanish).

I have no pretension of revolutionizing the culinary world, nor anything like that. What I do intend, is to demonstrate that you don't need to be a genius, spend a fortune on gadgets, or spend the whole day looking for products that come from god knows where, in order to prepare simple, economic and above all, tasty food.

All the recipes I present (with the exception of Munchies) are designed to serve at least three portions.

3)Neither the expensive is always good, nor the cheap is always bad.

A lot of the time, we pay more for the brand and the packaging, than for the product. That said, brands do tend to give a certain guarantee of quality, and some times the cheap stuff doesn't last long enough for us to get it home. Nonetheless, there are amazingly cheap offers available, for excellent quality food, every day. Don't be turned off by something just because it is cheap, or because it doesn't come from a certain store. Give it a go, you may be surprised;

4) Use the freezer.

If you make good use of the freezer, you can save a lot of money by buying larger quantities, or, and this is more important, you can cook larger quantities. It is almost always easier to cook for three or four, than it is for one, if for nothing else than the margin of error being much greater. Cook more, and save what you are not going to eat immediately, in the freezer. (Always label what you put in the freezer, if you don't, you won't find it when you want it)

5) Don't over-elaborate.

It's important to use your imagination in the kitchen, but let's not get carried away! A lot of good dishes have been spoilt by adding that one ingredient too many. Don't guild the lily! Some things are classics because they are simple, and we don't need to re-invent the wheel.

Okay, that's all! GIVE IT A GO, YOU NEVER KNOW, YOU MIGHT ENJOY YOURSELF!
